It has been said for years that Moscow does not have enough mosques for its thriving Muslim community. Ramadan and other festivities have often caught the local authorities off guard. The existing grande mosques are considered to be in insufficient quantity for the hundreds of thousands of worshippers. In fact, it is suggested that 12 new mega-mosques should be erected in order to satisfy current needs.
A poll for the Russian Duma was put forward in February 2024, and not only has it reached 2.2 million signatures in 2 months, but it seems that the traffic on the website was overwhelming. However, when the Duma website went back up, the petition was gone. When a new petition was made to replace the old one, more technical issues appeared. As of now, there is no petition for new grande mosques, however, authorities have reached out to the public and said that ‘plans are being made’. Whether it will be 12 new mosques or fewer, time will tell.
